In my entire life (and as I write this, it's equivalent to 31 years!), I have never come across a decent form of merchandise boasting about the glorious past of Indian hockey. No wonder, I had to make one here.

Isn't it frustrating, sometimes? Almost the entire world knows Pele as a legend, and Maradona as an incarnation of God ... but thanks to I-don't-know-whom-to-blame, almost nothing is known about an equal player ever to take the hockey field - Dhyanchand.

And what about the famous Brazilian football team of the 60's and 70's?! While a toddler of the present day can narrate stories about that awesome bunch of superhumans, even a full grown sports fan wonders when you mention the miracles of "The Magicians" of the 1936 Berlin Olympics.

And here's the most surprising and sad part: our blind, unreasonably unreasonable fanship of the game of cricket means that people in Holland, Germany, and even the UK know much, much more about Dhyanchand and Co. then we do here.

There are multiple reasons behind this neglect - like the modesty of the great team's players who would have done their job and gone back to bed, or the British rule that never lent any 'media power' to us Indians. But here's the Numero Uno reason: the Indian Hockey Federation! They have never worried about reviving hockey - forget taking pride in, and marketing, whatever has been achieved by Indians in the game.

Even today, it's a handful of people who know when Dhyanchand was born - and why the 29th of August is celebrated (really, celebrated??) as the National Sports Day.

And how many know about "Jhansi Heroes" ... or about why Dhyanchand was really called "Dhyan-Chand"!

Well, here's a suggestion from us ... that will hit Toube Bas in the shin as far as the sales is concerned: if you didn't know about these things already, please refrain from buying this t-shirt. It surely won't look good on you :(

If you did, though, we are certain you will carry this t-shirt with as much aplomb as those Magicians carried their medals! For you, we are sure, the magic of "The Magic Sticks" still ... sticks!!

We shall be doing just 25 t-shirts, and burning the screen frames then. May be we will do them in some other season - but for now, only 25 people will get to show this one off. Given the general passion for the National Game, we will find ourselves lucky enough if we reach that number too!

Pity!

This is the first time we have tried to do something "retro" at Toube Bas! Nothing could have been more appropriate for a t-shirt that speaks about historical stuff, really!

We went with the blue-melange fabric for two primary reasons:
1) It's slaty look adds a lot of character to the message - it's so non-flashy and modest!!
2) We just love the melange effect on t-shirts. In our opinion, they lend a great deal of maturity to the concept of t-shirts.

The Front:
The front uses a single color (greenish blue) print to show convey the message, "REMEMERING BERLIN 1936 - The Magic Sticks" ... all done in an eroding font that adds the much needed (and admired) grunge effect. 100% stylish!

In true restro-ishtyle, the bold text is backed by cross-sticks ... and we made sure that we capture the raw-looking sticks of the 1930's, not the neat ones that we get today! The ball - complete with eagle wings - adds the finishing touch to the front!

The Back
This is where we describe the magic, and introduce you to the magicians who floored the Germans, including the Führer!

The back starts with the rendition of the names in a graceful 'Marcele' font:
Dhyan Chand, Ali Iqtidar Shah Dara, Richard J. Allen , Mohammed Hussain, Roop Singh, Lionel C. Emmett, Paul Peter Fernandes, Joseph Galibardy, Ernest John, Goodsir-Cullen, Syed Mohammed Jafar, Ahsan Mohammed Khan, Ahmed Sher Khan, Mirza Nasir-ud-din Masud, Cyril J. Mitchie, Babu Narsoo Nimal, Joseph Philips, Shabban Shahab-ud-din, Gurcharan Singh Garewal, and Carlyle Carroll Tapsell

And then comes the magic that they blinded everyone with throughout the Olmypics! If you haven't checked these scores earlier, look at them now:

Hungary     0 – 4     India
United States     0 – 7     India
Japan     0 – 9     India
France     0  - 10     India
Germany      1 – 8     India

We're sure you were tempted to add the the scores, weren't you!

Incredible, isn't it? 1 goal conceded, and 38 blasted! I read, at www.bharatiyahockey.org, that in the second half of the finale, the Indians would take the ball to the German goal mouth, and bring it back - just to tease them a little bit! Ho ho! How tickling is that!!!!

We're sure you would have loved to be there, or at least, hear some stories or watch some videos from those times. Wish we could help you - but we can definitely send this t-shirt to you :))
